Love Well

“And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight.” - Philippians 1:9
Paul wrote this letter to the church in Philippi, and whenever I read this passage, I find myself wondering: Did the believers in Philippi lack love? Were they not already demonstrating the love of Christ? Why, then, did Paul pray for their love to increase?
When we look closely at this verse, one beautiful word stands out: “MORE.” Paul was not suggesting that the Philippian believers had no love. Rather, he was praying that their love would continue to grow and abound. Even when we believe we love others well, there is always room for our love to grow deeper and become more Christlike.
Another word in this verse that fascinates me is “INSIGHT.” Insight is the ability to understand someone or something deeply. Paul connects love with knowledge and insight because genuine Christian love is not merely an emotion; it also seeks to understand others with wisdom, patience, and compassion.
The people who come into our lives provide opportunities for us to demonstrate God’s love. We are called to love the people around us, but not merely in words or feelings. Our love should grow day by day, enabling us to understand others more deeply and respond to them with greater grace.
Some people may seem distant or may not appear to be worth our time. Others may say, “I don’t need anyone; I’m doing just fine on my own.” Still others may not reciprocate the love we show them. Yet, every person needs meaningful connection, compassion, and fellowship. We may never fully understand the struggles someone is facing, but we can choose to be present, to listen, and to love.
When someone close to you says, “I love you” or “You mean a lot to me,” consider it a blessing. Not everyone hears these words often, and some may go through life longing for such affirmation. How wonderful it is when God uses people in our lives to remind us that we are loved and valued!
First John 4:8 says, “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” Love is central to God’s character. When we love others sincerely, we reflect His nature to the world around us.
It takes understanding and courage to express love genuinely. Love is not always as easy to demonstrate as it is to talk about. Sometimes it requires patience, forgiveness, sacrifice, and a willingness to understand someone whose perspective differs from our own.
John 3:16 reminds us of the greatest expression of God’s love: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son.” God’s love was not merely spoken; it was demonstrated through the gift of His Son. In the same way, our love should be expressed through our actions, our words, and the way we treat others.
Love is not without purpose. When we love others, we reflect the God who first loved us. Our love becomes an opportunity to build meaningful relationships and point people toward Him.
As 1 John 4:16 reminds us, “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.”
As people grow and circumstances change, the ways we express love may also need to change. A person may need encouragement today, patience tomorrow, and a listening ear the next day. Loving well means learning to recognize those needs and responding with wisdom and compassion.
Loving well does not mean having no boundaries. Christian love is generous and sacrificial, but it is also guided by wisdom, truth, and discernment.
